Season 8 Recap
I’d call season 8 the season of Tiny Winter Cabins. Bob really got into adding a little cabin in so many of these! It also seemed like he really started to get into making that warm glow sky paired with a wintery cold landscape. I don’t blame him, I really enjoy the color palettes in those as well.
Favorite Painting: Episode 7 Winter Hideaway. The reason why I love this one so much is because of the depth. You can clearly see the 3 planes from the background, to the little cabin, and then finally to the foreground with the broken fence and the tree in the front. I felt great painting this one and you can see the confidence in my brushstrokes with this one.
Least Favorite Painting: Episode 5 Hunter’s Haven. The whole thing feels like mush to me. Too much brown, a chaotic sky that doesn’t seem to tie in with the rest of the composition. And there’s not definitive contrast because everything is the same value. There’s a cabin on the right side too, but you can barely see it because of the mush.
Painting I learned the most from: Episode 2 Lakeside Cabin. Mostly because Bob did something a little different and had the entire composition be worked within a small oval frame. That was quite a challenge but I think it helped make me become quicker and better with painting shorthand in such a tiny space.
