Season 4 Recap

I think this is the season where I’ve been seeing a vast improvement in my technique. I feel like I’ve gained more trust in my brush strokes and I’ve been finding myself with less frustrated sessions than previous seasons. I still have ways to go, but I do like where I’m headed!

Favorite Painting: Episode 4 Winter Sawscape. Even though I don’t necessarily like winter scenes, I feel like this one came right out of a storybook. I felt calm doing this one and I think the tree in the front has been one of the best trees I have painted. Everything about this one just seems right to me.

Least Favorite Painting: Episode 2 Tranquil Valley. The foliage in this one became super duper flat and I ended up just getting frustrated in general about how I handled all the values in this one. Just dark and flat.

Best Lesson Learned: Episode 11 Northwest Majesty. I think I turned the corner on this one with the plants and trees. Normally, I would just start layering paint strokes to create the foliage but for this, I really tried to focus on holding back on that to make sure everything felt more voluminous. Less focus on making every single leaf structure and more on the feel of big amounts of leaves, if that makes sense. Also the blue mountains in the back were A++ to me :)
